Happy Birthday Tah-Tonn!

Today is a VERY special day in the family calendar. It is Ah Khong's 70th birthday today.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TAH-TONN (Munchkin can't say Ah Khong). We have been trying to track down the Lau Lang all morning but there was no one home. Where had they gone we wondered.

Finally, this afternoon after the Munchkin Meal Minute (it does feel like that at the moment as he is eating like there is going to be a famine tomorrow), we got an audience with the Lau Lang, just home from a celebratory meal at a fancy restaurant (that sells Tu Bak - a meal is not a meal without Tu - Bak, we all know that!)

Tah-Tonn: Hello Munchkin.
Munchkin: Tah Tonnnnn!! Tah Tonnnn!
Mummy: Happy Birthday to.....
Munchkin: YOooooou
Mummy: Happy Birthday to......
Munchkin: YOOuuuuuuu
Mummy: Happy Birthday dear...
Munchkin: TAH TONNNNNNNN!!!!! Buff-Dee, Buff-Dee. Clap clap clap!

Ah Khong was sporting a new haircut as well...so handsome!

Where were you?

When Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th President of the United States of America. I was holding my little boy, saying a little prayer for the new hope that he brings with his inaugration.

The occasion seems to be miles away but the impact is real. It gives new hope. It opens previously locked doors, it holds promise. What was unthinkable a few decades ago is now reality. What was a dream is now alive.

Each day we are faced with the way things used to be and the way things have always been. This day has broken all traditional convention. For me, i has brought new hope. Hope that the glass ceiling can be shattered, maybe not today but one day. Maybe not by me, but by someone like me in the future.

What I can do in the meantime is fight, stand firm....and be strong, if not for myself, for the ones that will come after me. Who knows? I hope to live to see that day!

Major Melodramatic Monstrous Munchkin Meltdonwn!

After being at Chez Munchkin for approximately 4 years now, we decided that a few changes were due. We thought it a good idea to start on the family bathroom...well, Munchkin's bathroom really. As a consequence, in the last couple of months we have engaged a tiler man and picked some nice new tiles in preparation for these potentially aesthetically pleasing challenges.

T had spent the whole afternoon in the company of his Dremmel grout buster and by tea time 2 of the 3 walls were sans tiles. It was then time for the Munchkin to have his bath in preparation for bed....or so we thought.

Munchkin entered the bathroom with T. "Wall" said Munchkin. "Look! Wall! Daddy....." "Look" He was most fascinated at the tile free appearance of the walls.

Then, just as we went to pop him in his well beloved bath, Munchkin went hysterical. "NOOOOOOOOoooo" "Mummmyyyyyy" "NOooooooo" "Scawwwwyyyy"

He was NOT getting into THAT bath...not with the walls naked as they were.

We ended up giving him a shower..which he loved. The problem is, it is anther week till Mr Tiler man arrives. Watch this space!

Kids...don't you love 'em?

Twas the night before Christmas.....

Some days.....he just makes me smile. They both do.

Mind your P's and Q's

T and I have feel very strongly about trying (yes that be the operative) to instill some sort of a polite outlook in life in Munchkin. We don't want to, if we can help it, be the parents of one of "those" children who turn up at occasions and behave in the manner that all the other parents faces just scream "I am glad that is not MY child!!"

Anyway, Poppins has helped us in our quest and here is an occasion (it is not always!) that makes the effort worth while. Here's hoping! If this technique doesn't work, there is always the purple kai mou sou technique....tried and tested in forrin lands.

Two little words

We make it a point to say "I love you" to each other and to Munchkin as well.

Today, when Munchkin had been fished out of the bath with a big BOING (he likes being bounced out of the bath by his daddy), T said "I love you, Munchkin. I love you very much!"

Unprompted, Munchkin put his head on my shoulder, still wrapped up in his big fluffy towel, smiled at his daddy and said "Luff Yoo"

I can feel the tears welling up even as I write. We shared a great big "Gevvver" (Together) hug. Then T said "Tell mummy you love her too". As if on cue, Munchkin toddled over to me, grinning, arms wide and a he clasped his little hands round my neck he said, quietly but sweet as anything "Luff Yoo" while he buried his little head into my neck for a cuddle.

My world is a brighter place because of one little boy and those two little words...."Luff Yoo".

When you have children,

all dignity goes out the door....someone quoted this to me whilst I was in a hospital waiting room pre Munchkin.

These last few days have been spent drawing support (and sympathy) from close friends and family. The Chief Oracle as been on duty as have Ah Ee, Ah Ma, GAF, Aunty Air-lass and Aunty Sal. The topic of conversation has mainly been descriptions of chunder, restorative diet and after effects of the bug.

The quote of all quotes though, was this "Malfunctions in the digestive tract invariably cause results outside normal parameters at the input and output ports eventually"

You know who you are, hats off to you for making me smile on a very dreary day!

What is mine, is yours.....

Munhckin has been home experiencing mummy day care today as he is still recuperating from his latest malady. While he has been chiling out with his home girl, he has been getting lots of attention from his Ah Ee in particular who has been ringing a few times a day, checking up on progress in the recovery department.
Munchkin adores his Ah Ee so much so that everything he has, he wants to share with her. Today, Ah Ee (also known as the telephone) was given some crackers. She has also previously been given sausages (and he will not part with sausages for many others) and cheese.
However, this afternoon, following his p.m. helping of Ah Ee love, Munchkin decided that he was going to post one of his favourite boots to Ah Ee. "Boot.....Letters....Ah Ee....!" he exclaimed as he grinned at me. "Mummy, Picture!"
Hmm...Ah Ee has a lot to answer for. 11 months is a long time....but it will be worth the wait.

Chunder Cat is on the move

Chunder Cat is loose; Heaving, puking everywhere; Chunder Cat has spewed!
Here is the Munchkin this morning. He is home with us today (yes, both of us). Poor Munchkin has a malady. It all started at midnight (Sat/Sun) when we returned from a bit of a work shindig which was, well, amusing. He started calling out for "mummy" and being very unhappy. His evil mummy comforted him for a whil and left him to sort himself out....which he did....eventually.
After allowing us a lie in on Sunday morning, he woke and had breakfast as normal. We then went off the the supermarket to stock up on some food for the week. But this was not to be as, whilst being strapped into the trolley outside (fortunately) Munchkin got reacquianted with his breakfast sharing it with Daddy, the trolley and the pavement below.
We got him cleaned and proceeded to shop as he seemed ok. Then half way through we had a repeat performance. Enough was enough....out we dashed in a nick of time as more was to follow. We managed to pack up and arrive home in tact and Munckin proceeded to give us an encore every hour for the next 6 or so hours.
We put him to bed after bath and didn't hear anything from him till this morning when we went in to discover that he had been poorly overnight. Munchkin was changed and cleaned up by the staff only to have a repeat performance of the same.
All in all T and I have had 1 full clothes change each and Munchkin has had 2 so far. He has managed some dry crackers, a few bits of boiled potato, plenty of water and a handful of Cheerios. We have yet to be reacquianted with that lot...at the time of writing. Munchkin has just gone down for a sleep.
I only wish I could be ill for him....to spare him another miserable day.

In the chill of the night....and day...

It has been a cold day here. Overnight last night, temperatures dropped to -7 degrees Celcius. Today, the temperaure never got past 3 degrees. Tonight, it is predicted to drop even lower.

Munchkin has been tucked up in bed with extra clothing and an electric heater on a thermostat.

We are anticipating a very icy start to the morning tomorrow.

I bet we would have had to keep the heating on all night had the forrins still been here! As it is we are thankful for the snuggly cats who are functioning as hot water bottles in bed at night.

The cold matches my mood really since the forrins left....I have been left with a void and a hope that they will return soon....I really miss them..no one has told me off in days nor has anyone pulled me up on the fact that I am, indeed, a grumpy cow. What is truly warming is that despite that, they love me..just as I am. And that makes me glad!

White Christmas....11 days late!

Our road this morning just before we left for work. The snow didn't last but for a little while, the fresh snow lay crisp and even. Ah for it to be Christmas day again!

To Ah Ee, with love.

This was a special request from Ah Ee today. This one is for you, Ah Ee.

Goodbyes are not forever

Goodbyes are not the end; They simply mean I will miss you until we meet again.

The forrins leave us tomorrow and will be making the long journey back to Malaysia after what can only be described as the best Christmas I have had in a decade. I only wish that today was the day before they were due to arrive again and that Christmas was yet to come rather than past.

Our last parting was a hopeful one as I knew that they would be winging their way to these shores at Christmas. But this time, the next hello hug has not been planned yet. I can already feel the tears welling up and the heartstings are wrenched tight. I am trying not to think about it but, the darn clock keeps ticking the precious minutes away.

We have shared so much in such a short time. Munchkin has learnt to smile for the camera, he has been enjoying his Ah Ee and Mamah's home cooking and is now a big fan of noodles and congee, he has spent many happy hours on their laps listening to all manner of stories about anything from a wooly rhino to rabbits in Mr McGregor's garden. He has been loved, cuddled, chased, tickled, hung upside down...all with all the affection in the world.

He is going to miss them, T is going to miss them (I think!) and I am going to miss them. With them, they will, as always on parting take a piece of me home to warmer climbs. Still we have a few hours left......to savour this special bond that is family.
